Period pants – do they really work? The shocking truth

If you’re wondering “Do period pants really work?”, then I’m here to show you exactly how brilliant and effective they are. I can’t recommend the use of menstrual pants enough! They’ve totally changed my life, given me back my freedom and saved me so much money it’s unbelievable!

So, down to the nitty gritty – do these beauties really work? I could just tell you “Yes!”, but then you’d have to take my word for it! So how about I show you instead? Take a look at the short video below. Warning – this is real life period blood, not ink or coloured water. I feel that just showing coloured water is not a true likeness of the real capability of the product. I actually did wear these period pants overnight, for the maximum 12 hour limit in order to test to the max.

To give you an idea, I have very heavy flow and would normally have needed 4 tampons in order to stem this amount of blood. There was absolutely no leaking on my bedsheets and I felt dry and comfortable in the morning. The period pants were in dire need of changing at that point though! I took them straight to the sink, where I rinsed them thoroughly under cold, running water and recorded the results for you to see. I don’t know about you, but I find that amazing! When I was rinsing the pants, so much blood came out. Just as I thought it was coming to an end, more would appear. The value for money that this represents is unbelievable! It doesn’t make financial sense to keep on spending money on 4 tampons, when 1 pair of period pants will do the same job. Even better, the same pair of period pants can then be re-used, over and over again, for years!

Once I’d discovered this, I encouraged my two daughters to try period knickers. They both agree that they’re much more comfortable than wearing throw-away sanitary pads. My eldest daughter (now 21 years old) doesn’t want to use tampons because there’s a risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, so she loves her period pants as an alternative. My 14 year old daughter finds them really practical for long days at college. I’m really thrilled that my daughters are using these now and that they’re doing their bit for the environment too. We’ve saved sooo much money since making the swap as well!

Care of your period pants

Just a heads up on how to care for your period pants after using them. They do have the potential to last for years, but only if you give them the proper love and care that they deserve. You must rinse your period knickers under cold water immediately after use. This stops any bacteria from building up inside the protective gusset. You then need to wash your pants, ideally at 30 degrees, WITHOUT BLEACH OR FABRIC CONDITIONER, then peg out to dry. This is really important in order to maintain the lifespan of your underwear. Follow this advice and your period pants will keep you dry for years to come.
